(RT) An Egyptian court has passed the first death sentence for the killing of protesters during the popular uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak in February. The court has sentenced a police officer, Mohammed Mahmoud, to death. He was convicted in absentia of killing at least 20 demonstrators by randomly firing on them with his rifle.
The sentence is to be approved by an Islamic cleric prior to ratification by the court. The brutal crackdown by government forces to quell the unrest claimed the lives of at least 846 protesters.
